Are you funded by the government?

The Humane Society is not government-funded. However, there is city and county funding to maintain the animal control program. The sustained care, vaccinations, adoptions, medical services, foster care program, etc. are all funded by public donations, adoption fees, and other fundraising events. We are also continually trying to upgrade the facilities to provide even better care of the animals we receive.

All lost and stray animals MUST go to the animal control facility in the county in which they were found. The animal control facilities job is to help reach out to the potential owner of that animal during the duration of their stray hold.

Why should my pet be spayed or neutered?

Spaying /neutering your pet is good for your pet, you, and the community.
Spaying and neutering helps dogs and cats live longer, healthier lives.
Spaying and neutering can eliminate or reduce the incidence of a number of health problems that can be very difficult or expensive to treat.
Spaying eliminates the possibility of uterine or ovarian cancer and greatly reduces the incidence of breast cancer, particularly when your pet is spayed before her first estrous cycle.
Neutering eliminates testicular cancer and decreases the incidence of prostate disease.
Spaying and neutering makes pets better, more affectionate companions.
Spaying and neutering helps to reduce the number of homeless and unwanted pets in our community. Shelters everywhere are facing an overpopulation crisis. This means there are not enough homes for the number of animals born each year in Henderson County.

How do I purchase the annual City/County License for my pet?

Yearly rabies vaccinations (from a licensed veterinarian) are required for pets, as well as yearly county license (at your local humane society).

To obtain a City/County License for your animal please bring your proof of rabies to Henderson County Humane Society along with the annual Fee: $2.12.  Or, you can click on the link below to complete an online purchase and have a license mailed to you.

Kentucky Revised Statute:
KRS 258.015 Dogs, cats, and ferrets to be vaccinated against rabies -- Issuance and distribution of certificates -- Tags for dogs -- Requirements for compliance by qualified persons -- Cat and ferret owners.
(1)  Every owner shall have his dog, cat, or ferret initially vaccinated against rabies by the age of four (4) months and revaccinated at the expiration of the immunization period as certified by the veterinarian.

License required. [1] Any person owning, keeping, harboring or having custody of a dog over four months of age within Henderson County or any incorporated area therein shall each year obtain a County license therefor.

What if I find a stray cat?

If You find a stray cat/kitten and its healthy, it may be better where it is.
Call us to discuss options and/or Appointment, making sure we have adequate space to safely house them.
If you find a feral cat. (A feral cat is the offspring of stray or other feral cats and is not accustomed to human contact. Feral cats are usually too fearful to be handled or adopted.)  DO NOT TRY TO CATCH THEM.
We have feral cat traps available for a refundable  $60 deposit to catch them and get them to us for safe handling. 
WE ONLY PICK UP CATS THAT ARE SICK OR INJURED

What if I can no longer keep my pet and need to surrender?

Our shelter stays at capacity a majority of the time. However, we accept owner surrenders as space opens.  Please complete one of the applicable owner surrender applications below and we will contact you to make arrangements as space becomes available.

Please note, you must be a Henderson County Resident to surrender an animal. A valid drivers license or other picture identification with a Henderson address will be required.
